CaML (and Pranj Mehta’s SPELab) looking for a lab manager
CaML and the SPELab are looking for a bright, organized and interested candidate to jointly manage our labs for the 2014-15 academic year (with the option of longer). Detailed information posted below.
The Social Psychoneuroendocrinology Lab (SPEL), directed by Pranjal Mehta, Ph.D., and the Culture and Morality Lab (CaML), directed by Azim Shariff, Ph.D., are seeking a full-time lab manager to begin work in late summer or fall of 2014 (start date is flexible) for a period of one to two years. Lab manager duties will be split between the two labs.

Dr. Mehta’s Social Psychoneuroendocrinology Lab integrates approaches from social-personality psychology and behavioral neuroendocrinology to study biosocial mechanisms of status hierarchies/power, emotion regulation/stress, and decision-making. The methodological toolkit of the lab is broad and interdisciplinary, drawing on techniques from the behavioral sciences (behavioral observation in dyads and groups, social psychology and behavioral economics paradigms) and neuroscience (endogenous hormone measurement, exogenous hormone administration, cardiovascular responses, immune parameters). SPEL researchers conduct both well-controlled laboratory studies and naturalistic field studies (e.g., stock trader decision-making, stress processes and daily behaviors in community samples, field studies of status hierarchies). Dr. Shariff’s Culture and Morality Lab explores the evolutionary origins of and psychological mechanisms underlying moral and pro-social behavior, with a particular focus on the social consequences of religion and related cultural systems. Other questions being pursued include the psychological impact of income mobility beliefs, the diffusion of thinking and reasoning through social networks, the psychology of climate change beliefs, and research on crime and violence perception. The lab contains several graduate and undergraduate students conducting experiments using economic games, surveys, computer-based reaction time measures, and other social psychological methods. These studies are run in the lab, online and in the field (e.g. at churches, shopping malls, etc.). Responsibilities: The lab manager will be directly involved in all aspects of the research process for both labs, including the design and preparation of ethics proposals and experimental stimuli, data collection in the behavioral lab and the field, biomarkers measurement and analysis in SPEL’s in-house wet lab, and basic programming and data analysis in software programs such as SPSS, Inquisit, Matlab, ePrime, Biopac AcqKnowledge, Qualtrics, Noldus Observer, and website development software. The lab manager will also perform administrative duties essential for the lab’s daily operation, including scheduling and overseeing research teams.
Lab Manager Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field as well as a strong interest in research related to either or both of the two labs. Relevant experience in at least some aspects of the lab manager responsibilities is strongly preferred. Strong organizational skills, rigorous attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work independently and in teams are absolutely essential for success in the lab manager role. This position is an ideal fit for someone seeking additional research experience prior to continuing on to graduate school in social psychology and/or social neuroscience.
